DE GAULLE – BOURGUIBA: THE BATTLE OF BIZERTE
Synopsis : The Battle of Bizerte took place in July 1961, marking a violent confrontation between Tunisia and France over control of the strategic naval base in Bizerte. Despite Tunisia’s independence in 1956, France maintained a military presence, which became a symbol of continued colonial influence. Tensions escalated when Tunisian forces attempted to blockade the base, prompting a strong French military response. Heavy fighting resulted in significant casualties, mostly among Tunisians, and international condemnation followed. The crisis accelerated negotiations, leading to France’s eventual withdrawal from Bizerte in 1963.
